Why Child Ear Health Matters
Children in Lucknow frequently suffer from recurrent ear infections, hearing loss from middle ear fluid (glue ear), nasal allergies, and enlarged adenoids — problems that, when left untreated, affect speech development, school performance, and quality of life. Early detection changes outcomes.
Warning Signs in Your Child
Bring your child for evaluation if you notice:
- Not responding to their name or sounds at expected ages
- Delayed speech — no words by 12 months, no sentences by 24 months
- Turning up TV volume repeatedly or asking “what?” frequently
- Frequent ear pain, pulling at ears, or ear discharge
- Recurrent cold, blocked nose, or mouth breathing at night
- Snoring, restless sleep, or pauses in breathing
- Recurrent sneezing, runny nose, or itchy eyes during certain seasons
- Failed newborn hearing screening (BERA/OAE)
What the Child Ear Health Package Includes
Audiometry
Pure tone or play audiometry (age-adapted) to assess hearing threshold at different frequencies. Identifies conductive vs. sensorineural hearing loss.
Tympanometry
Non-invasive test of middle ear pressure and eardrum mobility. Detects glue ear — the most common cause of hearing loss in children.
ENT Examination
Otoscopy, nasal endoscopy, and throat examination including adenoid assessment. Identifies structural causes of ear and breathing problems.
Allergy Screening (add-on)
Skin prick testing for dust mites, pollens, and common food allergens — if allergic rhinitis is contributing to ear or breathing symptoms.
Newborn Hearing Screening — The 1-3-6 Rule
The national standard: screen by 1 month, diagnose by 3 months, begin intervention by 6 months. If your newborn’s hospital OAE (hearing) test was referred or failed, early follow-up with an ENT specialist is critical. At HealthNest, we assess referred newborns and coordinate BERA when needed.
Glue Ear — The Silent Hearing Loss
Glue ear (otitis media with effusion) is the most common cause of acquired hearing loss in children. Fluid accumulates behind the eardrum without any pain or fever — making it easy to miss. Children with glue ear may appear inattentive, have unclear speech, or struggle in noisy classrooms.
Tympanometry detects it in minutes. Treatment depends on duration and severity — ranging from watchful waiting and allergy management to grommets (ventilation tubes) when indicated.
